1        AN ORDINANCE requiring that prior to cremating

2        remains of decedents who came to their death in King

3        County the death must be reported to the King County

4         medical examiner’s office, and an authorization from the

5         King County medical examiner received releasing the body

6         for cremation; establishing a fee under the authority of

7         K.C.C. 2.99.030(B) to be charged by the King County

8         medical examiner’s office for review of reports of deaths of

9         persons whose remains are to be cremated.

11         BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF KING COUNTY:

12         There is hereby added to chapter 2.24 King County Code a new section to

13         read as follows:

14         NEW SECTION. SECTION 1.

15         No person shall cremate the body of a decedent who came to their death in

16         King County without first reporting the death to the King County medical

17         examiner’s office, and receiving an authorization from the King County medical

18         examiner releasing the body for cremation.

19         NEW SECTION. SECTION 2.

20             A. Effective January 1, 2008, the following fee is added to the King

21         County Code and is hereby established: Persons reporting a death to the King

22         County medical examiner’s office of a person whose remains are to be cremated

23         shall be charged a fee of fifty dollars ($50.00).

24             B. The King County medical examiner may waive the fee established

 25         pursuant to this section where the cost of the cremation to be performed was paid

26         prior to the implementation of this ordinance. No fee shall be charged for this

27         review when the cost of the cremation is borne by the county.

28         SECTION 3. Severability. If any provision of this ordinance or its

29         application to any person or circumstance is held invalid, the remainder of the

30         ordinance or the application of the provision to other persons or circumstances is

31         not affected.
